COCK-A-DOODLE-DOO
|
Romero Coates was a wealthy gentleman of West Indian origin who created a sensation in Bath and London in the early days of the Regency. During the day he wore heavy furs, and his evening costume sparkled with diamonds. He loved to drive in the Park in a shell-shaped carriage drawn by two fine horses. Conspicuous on both vehicle and horses was his crest, a cock crowing, with the motto : While I live I crow. One can readily picture the delight with which the gamins of London danced around this fantastic equipage, and the joyous shrieks of cock-a-doodle-doo which invariably heralded its appearance in Hyde Park. |
